White truffle
Pietralunga offers its visitors several local delicacies and artisanal products. Obviously truffles play the main part, in particular the White Truffle or Trifola, which finds here the ideal habitat to grow. There is plenty of “Truffle hunters” and some local companies are involved in the trade and processing of this precious product.
For those who are interested, truffle hunts can be organized all year long (call 340-7794069).
Truffle is the most representative product of this town of 2.350 residents, which counts over 300 licensed truffle hunters; Harvesting of the highly-esteemed white truffle goes from September to December and is followed by the “whitish” truffle January to April and, finally, the “Scorzone” (black truffle) truffle June to July. Pietralunga thus can rightly be named the Land of Truffle. Over 15.000 visitors a year attend the main Truffle fair in October, which drags visitors from other regions too; the black truffle fair in July attracts plenty of visitors as well. The Pietralunga truffle, exported worldwide, is a significant business for this area, mainly run by two companies, Jimmy Tartufi and Giuiano Tartufi, which market this prized delicacy in a variety of products: truffle sauces and creams, truffle-flavored olive oil, sterilized or frozen truffles. Several other types of truffles are harvested in Pietralunga all year long, such as the black Scorzone truffle, the winter black truffle, aka Nero Dolce (Sweet Black), and the Bianchetto (Whitish) truffle or “Marzuolo”.
Given the abundance and the importance of this product for the local economy, two special events are held each year: The first is dedicated to the Scorzone truffle (black truffle) at the end of July, the other to the Whitish truffle in early October, with the participation of local companies selling fresh truffles and truffle-based products. The local cuisine obviously makes ample use of truffles as well, with traditional dishes appreciated since Roman times: if you visit, we strongly recommend the truffle Potato Gnocchi or home-made tagliatelle.
Truffles are harvested in the following periods: White Truffle October 1st to December 31st, Scorzone black truffle June 1st to August 31st, Sweet black truffle January 1st to March 15th, whitish truffle January 15th to April 15th.
If you are interested, we can organize excursions in search of truffles all year long, with unforgettable walks in the woods escorted by truffle dogs and guides, including truffle tasting at local restaurants.
